The Commanders Have Announced 2 Player Contract Extensions

Even though they missed the playoffs this season, there is a bit of hope that perhaps the Washington Commanders are starting to head in the right direction.

They recently hired Eric Bieniemy, who is fresh off winning the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, as their new offensive coordinator, and more importantly, controversial owner Daniel Snyder is reportedly planning on selling the team.

On Friday, the team took two more small steps back toward respectability by agreeing with running back Jonathan Williams and linebacker David Mayo to one-year contract extensions, which will keep them in the nation’s capital for the 2023 campaign.

Neither was a huge part of what the Commanders did in 2022, but they both made their contributions.

Williams was fourth on the team in rushing yards this season with 152 yards in 13 games.

Mayo started three of his 13 games at linebacker, and he posted one sack, one pass defended and two tackles for loss.

The Commanders were fourth in rushing attempts and 20th in pass attempts this season, and it will be interesting to see if those numbers tilt in the other direction under Bieniemy.

He directed the NFL’s top offense this year in Kansas City, and it was an offense that threw the ball far more often than it kept the ball on the ground.

Washington doesn’t exactly have someone like Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, but they do have a solid weapon at wide receiver in Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin.

In addition, rookie wideout Jahan Dotson showed some promise with 523 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games.
