For the second year in a row, there is a quarterback competition and perhaps even a quarterback controversy brewing for the San Francisco 49ers.
Brock Purdy, the last player chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft, became the starter last season when Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending injury in Week 13 and played very well afterwards.
He is recovering from a UCL torn in his throwing elbow, which will give Trey Lance, the original starter at the beginning of last season, the opportunity to regain the QB1 spot.
One may think both signal-callers are working out individually in competition with each other, but actually, Purdy says that he and Lance are in constant communication and that they “want what’s best for each other.”

Lance was the third pick in the 2021 draft, and the Niners had the honor of selecting him after trading three first-round picks and a third-round selection for the one that became the North Dakota State University product.
He hasn’t played a ton of competitive football for someone his age, as he only had just over a full season of college football due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as eight contests in the NFL.
In two starts last season, he offered mixed results, as he made some nice completions to semi-covered receivers, but missed open or semi-open teammates at other times.
Purdy, on the other hand, looked surprisingly polished, poised and reliable for someone who was known merely as “Mr. Irrelevant” until Week 13.
Once San Francisco gets their QB situation sorted out, it could end up being the best team in the NFC and possibly the league’s next Super Bowl champion.
