The fanbase of the San Francisco 49ers seems to be split on who deserves to start at quarterback.

Some feel it should be Brock Purdy, who did very well under center after the team’s previous starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 13 of last season.

But others think it should be Trey Lance, who started the 2022 campaign as San Francisco’s QB1.

As it stands, Purdy is recovering from surgery on a UCL torn in his elbow he suffered in the NFC Championship Game, and it is unknown if he’ll be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season, let alone any portion of training camp.

That will give Lance the opportunity to once again be the 49ers’ permanent starter, a situation Ryan G Hensley reiterated.

Purdy played brilliantly during his stint as the Niners’ starting signal-caller, and he showed a skill set and poise that is seemingly unprecedented for a player who was the last player chosen in his draft class.

He is clearly more ready right now to be a QB1, especially considering the 49ers are trying to win their sixth Super Bowl and don’t have the luxury of time to develop a young QB.

But Lance may still have a higher ceiling.

He is bigger and stronger than Purdy, which makes many think he has a greater raw ability to connect on the long ball, and he is clearly a better dual-threat QB.

Lance has thus far played in just eight NFL games over his two seasons, and only time will tell how good a player he will actually become.
