It was a tough night for the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

After striking early and building a 2-0 lead, the team faltered against the Arizona Diamondbacks and fell into an 8-3 hole.

While the Cards ended up losing the game and falling to 7-11, there were glimmers of hope, particularly with new catcher Willson Contreras.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the 30-year-old went deep for his first home run as a Cardinal to bring the team to within 8-4.

St. Louis had added another run in the ninth when Contreras unloaded again and hit a two-run shot to make it an 8-7 game.

On Twitter, the Cardinals posted a video of Contreras’ second home run of the night.

It’s been an up and down start for the Cardinals, but it does appear that Contreras is starting to heat up after a rather difficult start to the season himself.

The offense finally woke up on Tuesday and gave the Cardinals a chance to win and keep pace with the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.

However, the game ended in disappointment and the Cardinals fell to six games back of first place.

Still, Contreras has begun to heat up, which could provide the inconsistent offense with a much-needed boost during this tough stretch.

Unfortunately, Arizona’s six-run fourth was too much for the Cards to overcome as they dropped yet another series.

On Wednesday, they’ll send Jake Woodford to the mound against veteran lefty Madison Bumgarner in hopes of avoiding their second sweep of the season.
