The Chicago Bears made a bold move in 2022 to sign Trevor Siemian to play as backup to Justin Fields.
While the move was a disaster, the team still has him for one more season.
Their two-year deal with the backup quarterback was something the team thought was wise.
However, they quickly learned how Siemian can’t play as a backup in a system meant for Fields.
His one game filling in for the young quarterback did not go well.
While some will blame the injury he suffered moments before the game began, it was the system he had before him that is to blame.
The play calls were for a mobile quarterback, something Siemian is not.
With him undergoing surgery shortly after his one start, the Bears have an important decision to make with him.
Their first option is to cut him, something that can save the Bears nearly $2 million.
Chicago enters the off-season with $98.6 million in cap space.
Releasing these players and savings:
Cody Whitehair = +$5,794
Justin Jones = +$4.9
Al-Quadin Muhammed = +$3,964
Lucas Patrick =+$3.9
Trevor Siemian = +$1,965$20,523
$119.123 in cap space

However, they could decide to keep him, giving the team a proven quarterback as a backup.
While both options are likely paths for the Bears, they can only choose one option.
If the team wants to keep the same system in place for their backup, releasing Siemian makes sense.
This allows for the team to sign a mobile quarterback either from the NFL Draft or through free agency.
However, the team might keep him, as they only have one year left on his contract.
But, it’s probably best to move on from him and find another backup quarterback in 2023.
