The chances of Trey Lance becoming the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers once again seem to be dwindling.
Although he has been splitting starting duties during the offseason along with free-agent signing Sam Darnold, incumbent starter Brock Purdy is reportedly on track with his recovery from a UCL torn in his throwing elbow.
The hope is that Purdy is ready for Week 1 of the new season, but if he isn’t, Lance could get the start against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the meantime, the North Dakota State University product took part in Tight End University, which was co-hosted by teammate George Kittle, who is one of the best tight ends in the NFL.
Tight End University, created by George Kittle, Greg Olsen & Travis Kelce, is back this week for a third year.
Over 70 players (current and former) are attending. All together to chill, train, practice, and pick each other’s brains.

Lance was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the 49ers thought so highly of him they traded four other picks for the one that became him.
He sat for most of his rookie season, but he did play in six games that year, starting two of them, and he showed enough promise for the Niners to name him the starter ahead of last season.
He showed mixed results in Week 1 before suffering a severe ankle injury in Week 2 that sidelined him the rest of the way.
That injury, along with the one suffered by previous starter Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13, paved the way for Purdy, then a rookie, to become San Francisco’s QB1 and take the league by storm.
Some feel the team should trade Lance, but at least for now, he’s staying put in the Bay, even if he’ll be spending all his time on the sideline while holding a clipboard.
