The Carolina Panthers have been going through an earnest rebuilding process ever since October when they fired head coach Matt Rhule and traded star running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers.

They recently hired Frank Reich, who had been at the helm of the Indianapolis Colts, to be their new head coach, and now they have added Shawn Jefferson as their wide receivers coach.

Jefferson has spent many years as an NFL coach, dating back to 2006 when the Detroit Lions hired him to be an offensive assistant.

Since then, he has been a wide receivers coach for the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals.

Back in the day, Jefferson spent 13 seasons as a player in the NFL, and he was a fairly productive wide receiver who finished his career with 7,023 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns.

He appeared in two Super Bowls, first in 1994 as a member of the San Diego Chargers and in 1996 with the New England Patriots.

In Carolina, Jefferson will look to maximize players such as DJ Moore, who is arguably their most powerful weapon moving forward.

Of course, after Baker Mayfield didn’t work out this season, the team will have to find its franchise quarterback of the future.

Sam Darnold started the Panthers’ last six games of the season, but it’s pretty safe to say that after five disappointing pro seasons, the former University of Southern California star won’t cut it as the signal-caller of a team that’s hoping to reach the playoffs.
