The Mets Are Reportedly Eyeing A Key Veteran Reliever

When the New York Mets went on a signing spree that resulted in them securing Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana and re-signing Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo, we all thought that they would be retiring from the market.

Then, at that moment, they pounced and agreed to sign Carlos Correa to a $315 million contract.

That deal did not come to fruition, but you get the point.

Don’t rule out the Mets for new signings: they are always on the market.

They had been quiet for a while, but the most recent reports seem to indicate that they are interested in making at least one more addition.

They would like to sign another left-handed reliever, and they have one in sight.

“The Mets are among those teams in attendance today for left-hander Zack Britton’s workout, per source. Britton obviously familiar with Buck Showalter from their mutual time in Baltimore. There’s room for another lefty in NY, though the Mets have prioritized bullpen flexibility,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Showalter, the Mets’ skipper, managed the Baltimore Orioles for years.

That was Britton’s team for most of the last decade.

The two of them have history, even if Showalter became infamous for not bringing Britton (his closer at the time) in during a tied game in the 2016 AL Wild Card.

Britton is not that pitcher anymore, but can still contribute if he can leave his health issues behind.

He boasts one of the highest groundball rates in the league at his best, and could be good for a low-to-mid-3.00s ERA if his arm is back to full health.
