The Dallas Cowboys are doing their due diligence on some elite prospects, but it seems like they’re all set with their pick at No. 26.

According to insider Mike Giardi, the Cowboys are quite interested in Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer, one of the highest-ranked tight ends in this class.

Mayer was the No. 2 tight end recruit in the nation when he came out of high school, choosing the Fighting Irish over other elite programs like Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia.

He’s coming off back-to-back impressive seasons and comes from a school with pedigree at that position, so there’s no doubt about his NFL potential.

He hauled in 71 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore, averaging nearly 12 yards per catch and excelling as a blocker, allowing zero pressures and sacks.

His junior year was even more impressive.

Mayer logged 67 receptions for 809 yards and nine scores, averaging 12.1 yards per catch and a passer rating of 103.9 when targeted.

He allowed just one QB pressure and one sack, and finished third in receiving yards, second in receptions, and first in receiving touchdowns in his position.

Furthermore, he also leaves the Fighting Irish as the all-time leader in receptions by a tight end.

While not an elite athlete, and he definitely doesn’t impress with his speed, Mayer takes elite care of the football and has a reliable pair of hands.

He’s also a perennial mismatch in the end zone.

He doesn’t offer that much explosiveness after the catch, but he’s by far the best blocker in his position in this class, so he could be a seamless fit for the Cowboys’ offense.
