In 2018, the Supreme Court made a landmark decision on a case that resulted in states being allowed to legalize the practice of sports gambling, opening up a brand new market within the world of sports.
Of course, when any previously prohibited practice or industry becomes legalized, it has to be regulated in order to protect its integrity and keep crime and misdeeds out.
The NFL has been cracking down on gambling recently, and Jeff Miller, its Executive VP of Communications and Player Health and Safety, went on “Good Morning Football” to clarify what isn’t allowed under its betting rules.

The main rule he outlined was that betting on the NFL isn’t allowed.
Any type of gambling while at a team facility, a team hotel, or while traveling with one’s team is also prohibited.
Miller also clarified that these restrictions apply not only to players and coaches but also to anyone who “touches the game” as he put it, which would include, for example, athletic trainers and other team employees.
The most publicized incident of an NFL player engaging in prohibited betting activities is wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who was suspended for the entire 2022 campaign for betting on games during the 2021 season.
Some have criticized the league for coming down hard on him while other players have gotten lighter suspensions after facing legal charges for allegedly committing violent crimes or acts of sexual misconduct.
Ridley will return to the field this season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he could be the piece they need to take the next step toward Super Bowl contention.
