Nationals Fans Are Reminded Of All The Talent Lost

From 2012 to 2019, the Washington Nationals were one of the most competitive teams in all of baseball.

That eight-year period included five trips to the postseason: four Division Series losses and a World Series win in 2019.

Around those days, the Nats had several excellent players.

Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Anthony Rendon, Howie Kendrick, Juan Soto, Patrick Corbin, Trea Turner, and others were true stars at one time.

Yet, their fates wanted them to be either away from the nation’s capital or on the injured list more often than not after the Nats won it all in 2019.

At one point, before that happened, they had three true superstars on their roster.

They let Harper go via free agency to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 2019 Nationals made it all the way to the World Series and won, even without Harper.

They did it against the best team of the last decade in the American League, the Houston Astros.

After that, it was the beginning of the end.

The team only wanted to pay one departing superstar and chose Strasburg over Rendon.

Both have been plagued by injuries ever since.

They also traded Turner and Scherzer to the Los Angeles Dodgers in an effort to cut costs and perhaps fund a Soto extension.

Zimmerman and Kendrick retired before that.

The Nats then were priced out of a Soto extension, so they flipped him to the San Diego Padres for prospects.

For Washington, it has been a downward spiral after tasting the sweet nectar of success in 2019.

Winning comes at a cost for teams that are afraid to invest considerable funds to keep winning.
