Mets Insider Reveals Update On Top Pitching Prospect

The New York Mets rotation has been mostly good so far this year.

Max Scherzer had one rocky out of three, and David Peterson, Tylor Megill, and Kodai Senga have all been good.

Carlos Carrasco has been a weak link, though, and might need a bit of a break or at least an extra day.

Initially, it was reported that Mets pitching prospect Jose Butto was not going to make his start for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday and was an option to “sandwich” between two starters and take the ball for one game on the West Coast road trip.

That’s apparently not going to happen for now, at least, for Mets insider Anthony DiComo.

“An update to this: Butto is now scheduled to start Saturday at Scranton. The Mets continue to discuss ways to insert an extra arm into their rotation on the West Coast trip, but they haven’t decided for sure or determined who it would be,” he wrote.

Their options are Butto, who has a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 frames in Triple-A this year, or a bullpen day.

Joey Lucchesi, who was a successful starter for the San Diego Padres before suffering a long-term injury and finding himself with the Mets, could also be an alternative.

He is rocking a nice 2.30 ERA in 15.2 frames in Syracuse.

Without Jose Quintana and Justin Verlander, and with Carrasco struggling to find his footing with an 11.42 ERA, it has been a challenge to build reliable pitching depth for the Mets.

Let’s see which road they take and if they achieve their goal of giving their starters an extra rest day.
