With the franchise tag deadline looming, the New York Giants made two impactful decisions for their offense.

They signed Daniel Jones to a four-year contract, and Saquon Barkley was given the franchise tag.

After this decision was made, Joe Schoen, the Giants’ general manager, commented on Barkley’s situation, as shared by SNY.

“As we build the team and continue with our offseason plan, we will do what’s best for the team, and we’re still mapping that out,” he said.

Barkley was drafted by the Giants in 2018 with the second overall pick.

He made an immediate impact on the roster, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

While the franchise tag is a stop-gap for now, it appears that the Giants will look to figure out a long-term deal moving forward.

Coming off of an injury in 2021, Barkley looked like a brand-new player.

He had the fourth-most rushing yards in the NFL in 2022 and was top-ten in rushing touchdowns.

Barkley’s impact on this team cannot be understated, as he provides a valuable safety blanket to their offense.

Because of Barkley’s rushing abilities, Jones was able to improve in 2022 as well, leading to his contract extension.

The Giants made the playoffs last season, which exceeded many expectations that were placed on them heading into the year.

With Jones and Barkley now locked into their roster for 2023, how will Schoen and the front office build around them?

Many have pointed to the Giants’ receiving corps as an area that could be improved.

With Kenny Golladay out the door, Schoen might be forced to make more offensive moves.
