Patrick Mahomes has put together quite the NFL career, even though he has only been the Kansas City Chiefs’ starter for five seasons.
Many are attributing Mahomes’ success to the fact that he sat behind a longtime NFL veteran for his rookie season, a great leader for him to follow.
as talented as @PatrickMahomes is, I’m a firm believer that Alex’s mentoring played a major role in developing Mahomes to the superstar he is today. Let’s make this an Alex Smith appreciation post #ChiefsKingdom pic.twitter.com/lqbaWDX2LG

When Mahomes was drafted in 2017, Alex Smith took him under his wing.
Often times, when a young player is drafted, the veteran above them is reluctant to impart any wisdom upon them.
However, Smith took a much different approach.
He listened to Mahomes, taking in his questions, and helping him along the way in the league.
Mahomes is an incredible talent, something that Smith must have identified early in Mahomes’ career.
When a player achieves the success that Mahomes has found in his young career, it can be easy to forget where you came from, and who helped you along the way.
Mahomes has continued to praise Smith, even after he left the Chiefs organization.
Smith won the Comeback Player of the Year award in 2020, which he was awarded after playing in the league despite suffering a large leg injury.
He is now retired, but his legacy will live on for years on end.
Smith made an impact on every organization that he was a part of.
His most noted achievement might be the development of Mahomes, who many consider the best current quarterback in the NFL.
Mahomes will have the opportunity to showcase his skills on Sunday, his third Super Bowl appearance in the past five seasons.
