Chargers HC Comments On The Future Of Justin Herbert

Justin Herbert, the excellent young quarterback of the Los Angeles Chargers, will start his fourth NFL season in September, and the team has reportedly started talks with him on a contract extension.

The Chargers would be fools to let him walk when his contract expires, even if he will command over $50 million a year, which is what his next deal is expected to be worth.

Head coach Brandon Staley says he’s confident Herbert is going to be LA’s quarterback “for a long time.”

From 2006 to 2019, Philip Rivers was the man under center for the Chargers, and although he was a very good signal-caller, they didn’t have a ton of success with him, although little, if any, of that was his fault .

When he decided to move on during the 2020 offseason and join the Indianapolis Colts, it looked like perhaps the Chargers would have a long rebuilding process ahead.

But luckily, they had the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and they used it on Herbert, who quickly emerged as a star during his rookie season.

He made the Pro Bowl the following year as he threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns, and last season, he improved his completion rate to 68.2 percent.

Although his other numbers dipped somewhat, he had to deal with his two main receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, missing significant stretches of the season, as well as a painful rib injury he suffered early in the year.

If Herbert isn’t an elite QB, he is close to that territory, and he has proven he can get things down in crunch time and in high-leverage situations.
