The Denver Broncos are coming off a pretty horrific season, but there is new hope now that Sean Payton has taken over as head coach.

Former Broncos star running back Terrell Davis says that he is “100 percent bought in” on the former New Orleans Saints coach.

“He’s got built-in equity,” Davis said of Payton. I’ve already seen what he can do with quarterbacks which leads me to be very positive in what he can do with Russell Wilson.”

Despite the continuing concern about quarterback Russell Wilson’s poor play this year, Davis says he also believes in the future Hall of Famer.

“He’s not washed. He’s not broken,” Davis said of the ex-Seattle Seahawks signal-caller. “But obviously, when you have a surrounding support system that doesn’t support what you do well, it will expose your flaws.”

After 10 seasons with the Seahawks during which he was always magnificent, Wilson looked like he was in desperate need of a tune-up and new spark plugs this season.

He’s managed just 16 touchdown passes, a 60.5 percent completion rate and an 84.4 passer rating, all of which were career lows.

As a result, the Broncos went 5-12 and missed the playoffs by a mile.

Injuries were a factor, as wide receiver Tim Patrick and running back Javonte Williams missed all or part of the season, but it all ultimately falls on Wilson.

In years past, Payton helped make Drew Brees into an all-time great quarterback, and their Saints teams were often one of the NFL’s best on offense.

Davis is hoping Payton and Wilson will take the team back to where it was when he was manning the backfield for it.

During his brief but outstanding career, he helped lead Denver to back-to-back Super Bowl championships in 1997 and 1998 along with legendary QB John Elway.

The AFC West is tough with the likes of Patrick Mahomes and the world-champion Kansas City Chiefs, plus Justin Herbert and the talented Los Angeles Chargers, but if Wilson plays well, the Broncos should have a real shot at their first playoff appearance since the 2015 season.
