Sean Payton stepped away from coaching after the 2021 NFL season.
Ever since then, there have been rumors surfacing about his future in the NFL, and where he would eventually end up.
Although the bulk of those rumors has been unsubstantiated, and largely speculative, it appears that Payton may get back in the game after all.
I think Sean Payton should be coaching the Chargers next year but if Sean Payton is the Saints coach again then he could pursue Tom Brady to join him. https://t.co/YYdQvmy9Y1

As Zach Gelb highlights above, Payton may return to the Saints in 2023.
If Payton does in fact return to the Saints, he’ll be welcomed back with open arms, as the team is in serious need of veteran coaching leadership.
Under the direction of current coach, Dennis Allen, the Saints have a 4-9 record.
Unless the Saints are able to pull out a miracle, this will be their worst season in the last 14 years.
While coaching the Saints, Payton’s worst record was 7-9.
Would Payton Go Elsewhere?
Multiple reports have surfaced that, if he were to return to coaching in the NFL, Payton would go back to the Saints.
However, what if he didn’t?
One possible destination is the Los Angeles Chargers.
With a potent offense that features players such as Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler, and young quarterback Justin Herbert, this could be a fantastic destination.
This opportunity would be great for Payton, especially considering that he would be able to get a fresh start with an exciting, electrifying offense.
The Chargers’ defense certainly needs work, something that Payton is very familiar with.
Payton and new staff could be the answer that the Chargers need to get over their current rut.
Let’s see what happens in the offseason.
