Lamar Hunt was one of the men who were most responsible for the NFL becoming the monster in the midway that it has been for the past half-century.
He founded the Dallas Texans, who were originally a franchise in the rival AFL, in 1960, and three years later he moved them to the northeast where they became the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hunt served as the Chiefs’ owner until his death in 2006, but his wife Norma carried on his legacy for years afterward.
On Sunday, the Chiefs organization announced that Norma Hunt herself had passed away.

After Lamar Hunt passed away, the team remained in the possession of the Hunt family, keeping Norma Hunt close to the organization while her son Clark Hunt represented the team at official NFL owner meetings.
Norma Hunt achieved the rare honor of attending every Super Bowl that has ever been played dating back to the game’s inception in 1967 as part of the agreement to merge the AFL with the NFL.
She was there when the Chiefs lost the first-ever Super Bowl to Bart Starr’s Green Bay Packers, and she was present for their first Super Bowl win three years later, as well as their two recent world championships in the last four seasons.
Of course, Lamar Hunt was the one who originally coined the term “Super Bowl,” which replaced the game’s original tongue-twisting name, the “AFL–NFL World Championship Game.”
This fall and winter, Patrick Mahomes and company will look to honor Norma Hunt’s memory and become a dynasty by winning their third world title in a span of five years.
