The Green Bay Packers have plenty of options at No. 15, but it seems like they may have found their guy already.
A report by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer states that GM Brian Gutekunst and the Packers are leaning towards taking TE Michael Mayer out of Notre Dame.
Even though the class is stacked with good players at the position, Breer believes Mayer is the best two-way tight end in the draft, even ahead of Utah’s Dalton Kincaid.

The Packers could benefit from Mayer’s versatility, experience, and intangibles, Breer says, not to mention they have a glaring hole at that position with Robert Tonyan’s departure.
Veteran TE Marcedes Lewis hasn’t signed a new deal, and Aaron Rodgers’ imminent departure might mean he’s also on his way out.
Mayer was a stalwart at Notre Dame, leaving the Fighting Irish as the program’s all-time leader in receptions by a tight end, not a small feature considering how many great players have thrived at that position in the program throughout the course of the years.
He looks like an NFL-ready prospect and is by far the best blocker among tight ends this season, so he might be worthy of such a high pick.
Mayer hauled in 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns in his three years with the Fighting Irish, and the Packers have been keeping tabs on him since holding him to a pre-draft visit earlier in April, so don’t be shocked if he’s the first official pick of the post-Aaron Rodgers was in Lambeau Field.
