NFL Insider Gives An Update On Baker Mayfield’s Future

Coming into the 2022 season, Baker Mayfield’s NFL career was seemingly hanging by a thread.

He had moments of brilliance in his first four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, but he had a reputation for being immature and hard to handle at times, and it led to them trading for quarterback Deshaun Watson and sending Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers.

Mayfield failed to measure up with the Panthers, and when he was released, it looked like perhaps he was done as an NFL QB1.

But the Los Angeles Rams picked him up after Matthew Stafford went down with a spinal cord injury, and he led them to a come-from-behind win in his debut with them.

That performance may have saved his career, as Jordan Schultz reported that Mayfield will have another opportunity to start under center soon in the NFL.

When the Browns took Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 draft, their fanbase had hope that he would usher the team into an era of success it hadn’t seen in decades.

He had a promising rookie season in which he set an NFL record for most touchdown passes by a rookie, and in 2020 he led Cleveland to its first playoff win since 1994.

But his tenure with the team ended amidst some tension with head coach Kevin Stefanski, and someone in the organization was quoted as saying they would prefer “an adult” at QB.

Mayfield’s talent is undeniable, and if he finds the right situation with a coach that will give him structure while being patient and constructive, perhaps he can find his second wind.
