The Chicago Bears head into the 2023 offseason with a decision to make in their backfield.
Current starting running back David Montgomery will become a free agent this year.
With the team not giving him a new deal, it seems the Bears are moving on from him.
However, if they replace him, they need someone who can make an impact.
With the free agency period slowly approaching, which two free agent running backs could the Bears target?
D’Ernest Johnson
If the Bears want a diamond in the rough type running back, signing D’Ernest Johnson is the right move.
The Cleveland Browns backup running back is someone the team has rarely used.
While they didn’t use him much in 2022, 2021 was a year where he stepped in for the team.
His elusiveness got him 5.3 yards per carry in 2021 on 100 rushes.
While he only had three touchdowns, his vision was important when he scored those points.

Signing him gives the Bears a solid running back who is a star in the making.
josh jacobs
If the Bears want a tough running back who isn’t afraid of defenders, they need Josh Jacobs.
His angry running in 2022 got him the NFL rushing yards title.
With the Las Vegas Raiders yet to re-sign him, he’s a free agent running back everyone wants.
He is both fast and tough, as he can break tackles and turn on the jets.
While he could be an expensive signing, the Bears have the money to get him.
Taking a chance on him will be a major upgrade for the Bears’ running back group.
