The New York Yankees are entering the 2023 season with a few question marks.

One of those questions centers around the competition for the starting shortstop role.

Players such as Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Oswaldo Cabrera are three internal options that the Yankees are very high on as of now.

Still, there’s no way to determine who will ultimately earn the job.

Meredith Marakovits of YES, the TV home of the Yankees, stopped by MLB Network to discuss the competition between the young stars at Yankees camp.

There, she provided a little bit of clarity on the situation and who the Yankees might be leaning towards as Opening Day approaches.

Marakovits discussed what manager Aaron Boone and General Manager Brian Cashman’s mindsets were about the shortstop competition at the beginning of spring camp.

She noted that both believe the shortstop position is wide open.

Marakovits made sure to highlight Volpe as one of the candidates to take the shortstop job.

Volpe stole two bases in his spring debut against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Still, the Yankees are high on Peraza and like his range at the shortstop position.

The Yankees also have not given up hope for Kiner-Falefa, according to Marakovits, who also noted that these players will see some time at second base this spring with Gleyber Torres headed to the World Baseball Classic, which begins next week.

As of now, the shortstop position is wide open for the Yankees and the competition will be an interesting one to watch.
