The New York Mets are a team of expensive veterans ready to compete for the World Series title.

They do, however, have a few excellent prospects because their farm system has improved a lot recently in spite of using some young talent to acquire impact players.

One of those impact young players is catcher Francisco Alvarez.

The 21-year-old carries plus raw power and a good hit tool that creates multiple opportunities for him as a major leaguer.

Even if he doesn’t stick at catcher, he should have enough bat to justify any position that may be in his future.

Alvarez is getting himself in game shape in the Dominican Republic.

Fellow Mets prospects there are impressed by his immense talent to hit a baseball hard.

“Francisco Álvarez is down at the Mets’ complex in the Dominican Republic. Check out the crowd of fellow prospects that gathered to watch him in the cage,” Mets insider Jacob Resnick tweeted.

Watching Alvarez hit is a show in itself.

Last year, he hit 18 home runs in Double-A with a .922 OPS.

Then he was promoted to Triple-A and hit nine more bombs with an .825 OPS.

He even had a short MLB cameo and finished with a homer and a .786 OPS in 14 trips to the plate.

He might have to wait a bit for consistent playing time this year with the Mets, but once he gets it, look out.

He has the hitting talent to be the Mets’ designated hitter right away.

He is that good.

To this point, his Opening Day assignment remains a mystery.

Don’t worry, he will force his way up at some point because the talent is just overwhelmingly good.
