The New York Yankees haven’t settled their shortstop situation to enter the season.
They have four candidates to win the starting gig: Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswald Peraza, Anthony Volpe, and Oswaldo Cabrera.
Kiner-Falefa was the starter last year but both his offense and defense left a lot to be desired.
Peraza is perhaps the likeliest candidate to start, as he offers 15-20-homer power and the potential to steal more than 30 bases.
He is also the best defender of the bunch.
We all witnessed Cabrera’s rise last season, but odds are that he will be required in the outfield a lot.
Volpe is the most talented of the group: he is a consensus top-ten prospect in MLB.
He hit 21 home runs and stole 50 bases between Double-A and Triple-A last year, so he oozes talent.
He is already leaving a strong impression in Yankees camp and in spring training games.
“Anthony Volpe has arrived in the Grapefruit League. MLB’s No. 5 prospect logs two hits, two steals (one to beat a pitchout!) in his first action of 2023 for the @Yankees,” MLB Pipeline tweeted.

The sequence in which Volpe laces a hard-hit single to center and proceeds to steal two bases is a picture of his talent and what he can offer if he wins the job.
He has the potential to hit 20 home runs or more when he is done developing, and could steal at least 35 bases if he wants to.
He is likely to start the season in Triple-A, but don’t rule out him making the team out of camp.
Volpe is the future face of the Yankees.
