When spring training started for the New York Yankees, it was believed that they would give Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswald Peraza, and Anthony Volpe a chance to win the shortstop position by 2023.
Kiner-Falefa is an offensive liability that had to be replaced in the playoffs.
Peraza is seen as the favorite given his solid power-speed combo and rock-solid defense.
Volpe, on the other hand, is the best prospect in the Yankees system but it was believed he could use more Triple-A seasoning before being called up.
That may still be the case, but it’s hard to ignore what he is doing during spring training.
“Anthony Volpe this spring training: .364/.417/.727; .479 wOBA, 1.144 OPS, 93.2 Average Exit Velocity. If the Yankees are truly giving Anthony Volpe a shot at making the Major League roster, has he not earned it so far?” Fireside Yankees tweeted.

Whether or not the Yankees gave Volpe a true shot at making the roster will be revealed in a couple of weeks, when it’s time to start the season.
If he keeps hitting like this and is still sent to Triple-A, then that was the plan all along.
Right now, after a week’s worth of games, we can say he has done everything in his power to make the roster.
He has a double, a home run, two steals, and just a couple of strikeouts while leading the Yankees in at-bats with 11.
It’s way too early to know if he will make the roster or not, but his huge performance is giving Yankee fans a lot of hope.
If he is not up when the team breaks camp, he shouldn’t take long to dominate Triple-A pitching and get the call.
