The New Orleans Saints have made some notable changes this offseason, and they’re clearly intent on being a playoff team next season.

They signed veteran free agent quarterback Derek Carr earlier this month, and they also lost veteran QB Andy Dalton, who started 14 games this past season after Jameis Winston was benched.

On Wednesday, they also added standout running back Jamaal Williams on a three-year contract.

Williams spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Lions, and after putting up some rather modest stats over his first five NFL seasons, he broke out in 2022.

The Brigham Young University product put up 1,066 rushing yards while leading the league with 17 rushing touchdowns.

He will give the Saints a nice insurance policy in case Alvin Kamara faces repercussions from the battery charges levied against him following an altercation at a Las Vegas nightclub last year.

Kamara’s trial will start in late July, and regardless of whether he is found guilty, there is the possibility that the NFL will end up suspending him.

With Williams, rookie standout wide receiver Chris Olave and a resurgent Michael Thomas, the Saints are starting to look like a possible dark horse team in the NFC.

In a very weak NFC South, they should have a good chance of finishing first and making the playoffs for the first time since Drew Brees’ final season in 2020.

Even if Kamara misses a huge chunk of the 2023 season, New Orleans appears to have a great opportunity to sneak up on the rest of the conference and possibly even pull off an upset come postseason time.
