The Mavericks have two years to convince Luka Doncic that they are ring candidates

The buzz around Luka Doncic and his long-term future with the Dallas Mavericks begins. The Slovenian international is under contract with the Texas franchise until the end of the 2026-27 season, but the first rumors have begun to emerge about the possibility of him requesting a transfer if he is not satisfied with the direction of the franchise. .

More specifically, the Mavericks have a “two-year window” to convince their top star that the team is capable of challenging for the ring and establishing itself as a perennial contender. After this deadline, Doncic would not close the doors upon his departure from Dallas if the team has not been able to fight for these objectives, according to the journalist from ESPNTim MacMahon.

In any case, MacMahon clarifies that Doncic is happy in the Mavericks and that he will not look for reasons to leave. If he did, it would be due exclusively to sporting reasons and the management’s inability to build a sufficiently competitive team. “That guy is a ruthless competitor, which means he loves to win,” MacMahon stated. “He is used to winning. He won titles at Real Madrid. He won a EuroBasket with the Slovenian team. He hates losing. He can’t stand it. Whether it’s cards, ping pong, or whatever. But especially in the NBA.”

Last season, the Mavericks reached the Conference Finals after beating the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns along the way. However, the team led by Jason Kidd seems to have taken a step back this season, forcing the coach to squeeze even more out of the superstar.

For now, the incorporation of Christian Wood has been insufficient and the departure of Jalen Brunson has not been solved. Therefore, it is not surprising that various trade rumors have surfaced in parallel suggesting that the Mavericks will make a move before the market closes in order to reinforce the roster.
