The Miami Marlins were one of several MLB teams that entered the offseason with “manager” on their to-do list.
After a thorough search, the organization chose former St. Louis Cardinals bench coach Skip Schumaker to lead a young roster in 2023 and beyond.
Schumaker was introduced to the media and the world as the new Marlins skipper on Thursday.

As a player, Schumaker was part of the St. Louis Cardinals’ roster that won the 2006 and the 2011 World Series.
After retiring in 2015, he was named the San Diego Padres’ new first base coach for the 2018 campaign.
He was impressed with his baseball mind there, and before the 2020 season, he was promoted to associate manager.
His longtime team, the Cardinals, brought him aboard in late 2021 to be their bench coach, a role he fulfilled to perfection in the 2022 season.
Now, I have interviewed for the Marlins managerial position and got the job.
You could say that Schumaker has left a great impression everywhere he has gone, and that it is evident by his career path after retiring as a player.
Schumaker Will Inherit A Talented, But Unbalanced Roster
He will be in charge of a young Marlins team with lots of good pitching, but the offensive outlook isn’t particularly promising.
Marlins fans were celebrating his hire on social media, but at the same time, they were replying to the Marlins tweet asking the team to spend some money and give him a competitive roster.

Clearly, fans don’t have much confidence in ownership spending too much to improve the roster.
Let’s see if Schumaker can either convince him or optimize the organization’s player development skills.
