The Utah Jazz season is in time for a last-minute surprise. After joining the Salt Lake City franchise during the market close as part of the three-way operation with the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves, Russell Westbrook’s future could be in Utah despite numerous reports that point to a potential ‘buyout’.
He gerente general of the Jazz, Justin Zanik, has stated in a press conference that management has not yet made a final decision regarding the future of Westbrook, who is open to playing for the Jazz. “We are open to all possibilities with him. He probably needs some time. No decision has been made and no possibility has been eliminated either. He is open to staying here. We will give him time to find out,” said the executive according to journalist Eric Walden.
Despite these statements, various media outlets insist that the ‘buyout’ is the most likely option. If so, teams like the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls are the favorites to get their services.
At first, the departure of Mike Conley, Malik Beasley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker was seen as an opportunity for the likes of Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, Talen Horton-Tucker and Leandro Bolmaro to get more minutes. A scenario that would significantly condition the hypothetical continuity of Westbrook. However, journalist Andy Larsen reports that the Jazz would prioritize track time for youngsters in such a situation, so Westbrook would have to accept a lesser role.
“No possibility has been eliminated,” Zanik added of Westbrook. “But he’s been great. It’s been great talking to him. He is a great professional and has praised the Jazz and the organization. He is open to staying here.”
The point guard has averaged 15.9 points, 7.5 assists and 6.2 rebounds off the bench this season for the Lakers. It should be noted that the Jazz have already officially presented Juan Toscano and Damian Jones, the other two players received from the Lakers, but the same has not been done with Westbrook.
