The Houston Astros fired general manager James Click on Friday, just under a week after winning the 2022 World Series.

It certainly qualified as a surprise for those who don’t follow the Astros every day.

Click had been in charge since January 2020, and took the Astros to the AL Championship Series once and twice to the Fall Classic.

He had fallen out of favor with owner Jim Crane and was fired on Friday, just as we head into the offseason.

As it happens in almost every company or place, when the leader is dismissed, most or all of the peiple that came with him are also let go.

That’s exactly what is happening in Houston.

“The Houston Astros also fired assistant general manager Scott Powers, sources told ESPN. Powers was a former R&D executive with the Dodgers who was brought in as an AGM by James Click in January. Now Click and Powers are gone from the World Series champions on the same day,” insider Jeff Passan tweeted.

Powers, as Passan stated, had taken over as Click’s assistant GM at the start of the year.

He is now going with him.

He was the Los Angeles Dodgers’ director of quantitative analysis from 2018 to December of 2021.

Before that, he worked in soccer and also with the Oakland Athletics.

Powers has enough resume and smarts to look for another opportunity out there.

He can also follow Click wherever he lands, but the executive should take his time to carefully explore his possibilities.

Top contenders are always on the lookout for new talent for their front offices, and Powers could be a nice addition.
