The Miami Marlins have built a strong starting rotation in recent years, developing stars such as Edward Cabrera, Pablo Lopez, and Jesus Luzardo.

But perhaps the most exciting piece of their rotation is right-hander and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara.

Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in December of 2017, Alcantara immediately burst onto the scene for the Marlins and became the club’s ace.

The 27-year-old won 14 games in 2022 and posted an ERA of 2.28 in 32 starts.

On Twitter, the Marlins posted a clip of a special MLB Network feature with Alcantara, who discussed the mentality he brings with him when pitching.

In the clip, analyst and former MLB star Yonder Alonso asked Alcantara to take him through what a typical day is like for the right-hander.

One interesting thing to note is that while warming up, Alcantara actually experiments with a red ball that is slightly heavier than a regular baseball.

The right-hander discussed what the red ball is for and how it helps prepare him.

He talked about how it helps him build a little extra arm strength while pitching and ease his delivery in the process.

Alcantara threw a live session of batting practice to his teammates.

Alonso asked the reigning Cy Young about his mindset while pitching and the confidence he pitches with.

Alcantara responded by saying that everything he does, he does with “Sandy mentality,” which is his way of instilling confidence in himself and preparing himself to go out and dominate while on the mound.
