Red Sox Fans Are Still Recovering From A Haunting Trade

The Boston Red Sox have been very hit-or-miss over the past decade, having finished in last place in the American League East five times, but also winning two World Series titles to follow up their runs in 2004 and 2007.

But three years ago on this date, a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers took place that shook fans in Boston to their core and still haunts them.

This was the trading of Mookie Betts.

Left-hander David Price went to the Dodgers along with Betts.

In return, the Red Sox received outfielder Alex Verdugo, infielder Jeter Downs, and catcher Connor Wong.

The deal was pretty one-sided and has not worked out in Boston’s favor thus far.

On Twitter, fans were reminded of this rather lopsided trade.

Since this trade was made, the Red Sox have missed the postseason twice, finishing last place in the AL East.

They reached the postseason in 2021 as a Wild Card team and made a surprise run to the ALCS, where they would lose in six games to the Houston Astros.

While Verdugo has been a productive player for the Red Sox, Wong hasn’t made much of an impact at the big-league level, and neither did Downs, who is now in the Washington Nationals organization.

The Dodgers have reached the postseason every year since this trade was made, winning the World Series in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

In the end, Red Sox fans bore the brunt of this trade, one that has worked out quite well for the Dodgers.
