Rangers Receive Unfortunate Jacob deGrom Update

The Texas Rangers were busy this winter and addressed the various holes in their starting pitching.

Their biggest moves were the signings of Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney, and Nathan Eovaldi.

The team also acquired veteran Jake Odorizzi in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.

Needless to say, the starting rotation is in much better shape heading into 2023.

However, the Rangers received some unfortunate news on their newly signed ace.

According to General Manager Chris Young, deGrom felt tightness in his left side during his bullpen session a few days ago and will not be throwing today.

Young says that as a precaution, deGrom will be held back for a day or two, especially with cold and wet conditions in Arizona.

Rangers insider Kennedi Landy confirmed the news on Twitter.

Obviously, this may not necessarily be a major setback for deGrom, but it is still concerning from the perspective of a Rangers fan.

deGrom’s time with the New York Mets included various bouts with injuries, and given his injury history, this news may give Rangers fans some pause.

If it turns out to be more severe than Young and the Rangers anticipate, then this is bad news for the Rangers.

They’ll still have Eovaldi, Heaney, Odorizzi, and Martin Perez in their rotation, but losing deGrom would be a devastating blow for a team that appears to have turned the corner and put themselves back in a position to contend again.

The next couple of days should give the Rangers a clearer picture of the situation and its severity.
