On Thursday, the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies experienced a harrowing incident when first baseman Rhys Hoskins went down with an apparent knee injury during the team’s Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers.
Hoskins was attempting to field a ground ball when he suffered the injury.
The slugger was subsequently carted off the field.
Later, it was revealed that Hoskins had a torn ACL and would need surgery.
The Phillies will now open the season without both Hoskins and slugger Bryce Harper.
On Twitter, the Phillies posted a photo of Hoskins celebrating a home run with a message of support in the caption.

This is certainly a huge blow for the Phillies, who were already going to begin the season without Harper.
With Hoskins likely done for the season, the Phillies may need to look into acquiring a bat when the trade deadline comes.
Philadelphia won 87 games and captured the third Wild Card spot in the National League in 2022.
They took down the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round before pulling off upsets against the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres in the next two rounds.
They fell short in the World Series against the Houston Astros.
Hoskins was a key contributor for the Phillies last season and provided some heroics during the postseason.
Fans in Philadelphia are certainly hoping that Hoskins can recover as quickly as possible.
They still have Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, JT Realmuto, and Kyle Schwarber in their lineup.
But with Hoskins down, there is a void at first base.
