The New England Patriots are making a lot of headlines this week when it comes to the team’s quarterback situation and what Bill Belichick and company intend to do for the 2023 NFL season.
After a stellar rookie campaign in New England, which resulted in a Pro Bowl selection, Mac Jones returned in his sophomore season.
Jones returned so severely that many have questioned whether he’s the right man under center in New England and if the team should look for another option like Lamar Jackson or a rookie in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
However, one of the main reasons for Jones’ regression might have been the absence of Josh McDaniel, who took the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Now the Patriots have brought back a familiar face in Bill O’Brien to run the offense, and Khari Thompson of WEEI thinks that could be what is needed to unlock Jones.
The impact of Bill O’Brien on Mac Jones
“We’re going to get the details on point, put him in a competent offense again… but we also gotta get some weapons in here – guys that are going to be dynamic, that are going to make your QB look good.” – @kdthompson5 pic.twitter.com/y9W9iKKLP6

Jackson being linked to the Patriots makes the Jones situation in New England that much more interesting, as the team could be looking to move on or at least make him a backup if they can land the former NFL MVP.
However, if the team is moving forward with Jones under center, adding O’Brien is a step in the right direction, as it will give the team some stability on offense, which wasn’t the case last season.
The real question moving forward is if Jackson’s availability and the potential desire to be in New England have changed things.
Otherwise, Jones might have another season to prove himself to Belichick and his coaching staff.
