The San Diego Padres are going to have some work to do next offseason.
While their team is in good shape, slugger and MVP candidate Manny Machado revealed that he will be opting out of the remaining five years of his deal with the Padres.
This means Machado will test the waters of free agency for the first time since 2019.
And so, the Padres have made it their top priority to try and re-sign Machado at the end of the season.
Padres owner Peter Seidler was asked about the risks of an increased payroll, but simply replied by saying that there is also a risk of doing nothing at all.

Clearly, Seidler does not care too much about having too high of a payroll.
In fact, he seems to believe that there is a greater risk of doing nothing at all.
This is typically what fans want to hear from their team’s owners.
New York Mets fans can attest to that, with Steve Cohen being quite aggressive in the free agent market this offseason.
But fans of other teams may wish that their owners had the same mentality as Seidler.
Often times, we see owners of mid- or small-market teams being unwilling to spend money to improve their clubs.
While not every club has the resources that the Padres do financially, it’s easy to see where fans can get frustrated with their team’s front offices for being stagnant.
Ultimately, the greater risk is doing nothing at all, and Seidler clearly understands this as he looks to bring back Machado.
