It wasn’t too long ago that Cam Newton was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
He was the top pick in the 2011 draft, and he won the MVP award in 2015 when he threw for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns.
That was the year he led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Denver Broncos in Peyton Manning’s final game.
But his game has declined mightily over the past few years, and his days as a starter appear to be over.
Fox Sports 1 personality Nick Wright says that Newton should join the Kansas City Chiefs and be a backup behind Patrick Mahomes.
“Cam, come to Kansas City. It makes perfect sense.”

Wright’s argument is that rather than simply standing on the sideline all the time, the Chiefs could occasionally play him in certain situations where they need to run a quarterback sneak play, such as on third down or fourth down and one, or near the goal line .
The analyst also said that Kansas City would give Newton a great opportunity to win the world championship that has thus far eluded him.
One of the reasons Newton’s stock has failed since his MVP year is because of injuries, such as the Linfranc fracture that limited him to just two games during the 2019 season.
The season before that, 2018, was the last time he threw for over 3,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in a single year.
Newton is just 33 years of age, so he’s not exactly old yet, and he could be a good “break glass in case of emergency” option should a team’s QB1 get injured.
