Many positional groups in the NFL often get overlooked.
Wide receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, and linebackers are typically the most popular players in the league.
Despite their lack of league-wide recognition, offensive linemen have one of the NFL’s most important jobs.
Not only do they help protect the quarterback, but they help the run-game tick as well.
The Philadelphia Eagles recognize this and have recently extended their star right tackle, Lane Johnson.
Eagles are giving All-Pro RT Lane Johnson a one-year, $33.445 million contract extension, including $30 million guaranteed, per source. He’s now under contract through 2026. Johnson hasn’t surrendered a sack the past two seasons, even playing last postseason with a torn adductor.

Johnson’s extension was worth $33.445 million and he is now tied to the Eagles until 2026.
After this extension was inked, many fans expressed their opinions on the matter.
Some fans were skeptical, asserting that this was far too much to pay for an offensive lineman.
Overpay 😭

While Johnson has immense value on the Eagles’ offense, this is a significant amount of capital to dedicate to one player.
However, as evidenced by the Los Angeles Rams during the 2021 NFL season, going all-in can pay off, potentially resulting in a Super Bowl victory.
Many fans have been in full support of this move, even though it’s a significant dollar amount.
Wait $30 million for one year to an o-lineman? WOW! Good for Lane Johnson.

Johnson is seen as one of, if not the best offensive lineman in the entire league, as another fan indicates.
Best in business

Jalen Hurts was nominated for league MVP in 2022, which was largely due to elite offensive line play.
Although nothing in the NFL is guaranteed, this move at least solidifies the Eagles’ line for the next several years.
Good move. Now, Howie will restructure and spread his deal over 3 seasons. Open up more cap room

Ultimately, teams can make salary cap moves each season, moving money around if they need to be.
While Johnson’s extension looks enormous, the team must have a plan in place for him moving forward.
