At this point, all hope seems lost for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team entered Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees with a 33-47 record, 10 games out of first place.

All the progress that was made in May has been lost.

And so, with the trade deadline approaching, it seems very likely that the team will look to sell some pieces, especially players with expiring contracts.

On Friday, MLB Network member and St. Louis native Greg Amsinger commented on what the trade deadline might look like for St. Louis and how they can prepare for 2024.

Amsinger noted that now is a good time for the Cardinals to reset and capitalize on their impending free agents, also noting that there will be several free agent starters they can choose from this coming winter.

Amsinger predicted that St. Louis will trade Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom have expiring contracts.

He predicted that Flaherty could benefit from a homecoming if they traded him to the Los Angeles Angels and that he would give them a second starter to go alongside Shohei Ohtani.

He also noted that Tommy Edman could be a trade piece that teams may have been interested in and noted that the Texas Rangers are a team that could use someone like him who can play all over the diamond.

Amsinger believes that if the Cardinals use this opportunity to win back some prospects and possibly even some pieces for next year, they could still have a shot at winning the NL Central in 2024.
