Everyone in the MLB world has been impressed with New York Mets owner Steve Cohen’s spending power.
Since taking over as the new Mets’ leader and decision-maker in late 2020, he has made impacttul move after impactful move.
Whether it is trades, extensions, or big free agent signings, Cohen is definitely not afraid to sign checks if they are going to improve the Mets.
That’s what most fans dream about in an owner.
Owners of small-market teams (ie, those who do not want to spend a dime on their rosters) may not like Cohen, but players love him, fans adore him – and agents like him, too.
Of course they do: a guy like Cohen not only spends a lot and drives up the price on most free agents, but also forces contenders to pay if they want good players.
As long as players get paid, agents do too.
Boras Considers Cohen A “Goliath”
Here is what MLB’s most powerful agent, Scott Boras, had to say about Cohen recently.
“Scott Boras on Steve Cohen’s spending spree: ‘Our game needs goliaths.’ I compared the Mets owner to King Kong hanging off the Empire State Building,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

That’s definitely an interesting (and amusing) comp.
Boras is right: baseball needs goliaths.
They need someone who keeps rival teams on their heels, someone who forces them to be better whether it is by paying or overhauling the way they approach baseball operations.
Young, aspiring baseball players deciding between two or three sports also surely like to see the sums some MLB teams, including the Mets, are giving in free agency.
Overall, having owners who aren’t afraid to spend is good for the health of the game.
