The larger bases are MLB’s newest sensation.

Everybody is currently trying to swipe a base.

It doesn’t matter if the player has done it for all his life or if he has never attempted a stolen base: there is always a first time, and with larger bases and better odds to reach the next base safely, what better moment to be bold and try?

This was the case with Milwaukee Brewers infielder/designated hitter Luke Voit.

In the Brewers’ Wednesday game against the New York Mets, Voit was on first with a man on third and Jesse Winker at the plate.

He took advantage of the fact that nobody expects him to steal a base and took off for second, even though there were two outs (getting caught would have killed the inning with a man in scoring position).

There wasn’t even a throw: Voit had stolen the second base of his career.

The first steal came last season.

The best came when he reached second safely and started raising his arm in celebration, looking and smiling at the Brewers’ dugout.

Voit is not really a speedster: he is more of an on-base, power threat.

He led the majors in the pandemic season with 22 home runs, but injuries and a lack of defensive value have made it difficult for him to find a permanent home.

This winter, he signed with the Brewers on a one-year deal, with a club option for 2024.

He has the chance to stick for the long-term if he has a good season.

The Brewers offense could really use vintage Voit.

The newfound stolen bases are just a bonus.
