Joe Tippmann OL – Scouting Report – USA Informing

Scouting Notes

  • Exceptionally light on his feet.
  • Hands are strong as hell, he consistently threw rushers to the ground.
  • Hand strikes are perfectly timed, but placement is often poor.
  • Lateral mobility is subpar, but he uses his strength and hands to overcome that well.
  • Doesn’t bring the “hurt”, isn’t a mauler.
  • Got utterly dominated against Illinois.
  • Poor counters – spin, push-pull, rip, club moves all worked on him with ease.
  • Many bad reps.

Short Summary

Joe Tippmann has one elite tool in his arsenal, a few good ones, and many flaws. His hands from him are undefeated. His strikes from him are forceful and powerful, and when he can lock on properly defenders do n’t stand a chance. In fact, they are more likely to end up on the ground then to walk away cleanly. Aside from that, he has good quickness and movement skills. Those are great skills to build on, as those are either extremely hard to learn and excel at, or they are unteachable.

Unfortunately, in every other area of the game, Tippmann is a true work in progress. He clearly has the strength, but he doesn’t use his lower body power to move defenders enough. He also desperately needs to upgrade his reactionary arsenal, especially in such a reactionary position.

I love his potential, but Joe Tippmann is just an attractive ball of clay, who could be a liability early in his career before developing into a potential stud.
