Seven years ago, star outfielder Jason Heyward signed a massive contract with the Chicago Cubs after a year with the rival St. Louis Cardinals.

It was later discovered that the Cardinals’ offer to Heyward was actually worth more than what the Cubs offered him, drawing the ire of St. Louis fans.

When explaining his reasoning for choosing the Cubs over the Cards, Heyward cited that the Cards had an “aging core,” specifically pointing to Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright.

The Heyward signing has not worked out for the Cubs, as the eleven promising outfielder has hit just .245 in seven years with the team.

Today, the Cubs released Heyward, and a Cardinals fan found Heyward’s old comments on Twitter and posted a side by side with the news from several weeks ago that Wainwright would be returning.

Heyward’s Comments Did Not Age Well

While Holiday left the team after the 2016 season and retired after 2018, Molina stuck around through the 2022 season and is just now beginning his retirement.

Wainwright also bounced back from numerous injuries and reinvented himself, becoming the team’s ace again.

Obviously, Heyward’s comments didn’t age terribly well.

The Cubs still owe the veteran outfielder $22 million in 2023 following his release.

The Cubs did win the World Series in 2016, but Heyward never quite panned out for the team.

Wainwright will be retiring at the end of the 2023 season.

He is the last holdover from the Cards’ World Series teams from 2006 and 2011.

In the end, St. Louis got the last laugh, and Cardinals fans are taking a lot of pleasure in that today.
