In the first part of this post we reflected on the importance of knowing public speaking with skill in the world in which we live, as well as the benefits that this can bring us when it comes to expanding our income-generating potential. In this second part we are going to expand that reflection by incorporating some tactics to increase that skill.
Many of these tactics are anchored in the branch of psychology and they aim to improve our mental focus when communicating and presenting ideas to our audience.
Let’s see them.
project confidence
From the moment you walk through the door to speak, projects confidence and security. People who see you must perceive that you have everything under control. Slow and fluid movements, smile, cadence.
Act confident and you will feel confident.
just relax
We all get a little nervous about speaking in public. Sometimes very nervous. To calm those nerves, it is key that you practice some relaxation techniques. That will reduce the likelihood that stress will play tricks on you.
Breath deeply. Walk around a bit. Take the air. Listen to music. We each have our preferred shape. use it
Practice speaking without prior preparation
Many times we have heard that preparation is key to public speaking, and it is so. But often hiding behind preparation makes our presentation stiff and not very fluid.
Something you can do to mitigate this effect is to practice the talk about a topic without preparing it big deal, as if your presentation was some kind of conversation, and not like something you’re reading. This will improve the naturalness of your communication and the chances that you will connect with your audience.
keep it simple
We often think that using fancy words and phrases will make us look more like ourselves in the eyes of our audience, but it usually has the opposite effect: It makes it harder for them to follow us, as well as adding pressure and complexity to our thought process.
when you communicate, keep it simple. Words of all life, short phrases, simple ideas. As if it were a conversation with a friend. That style appeals to the average individual much better than the sophisticated and complex style.
Follow a structure when communicating your message
When giving a presentation, the structure of the message is key to holding attention and getting the audience to retain the most important parts.
A structure that usually works very well is the following:
- What is the problem
- Because it is important
- What is the solution you propose and why?
The flow of your ideas It is as important as the content. You may think it shouldn’t be like that, but it’s how the mind works. If you do not make it easy for your audience to retain the message with a good structure, even if that message is a work of art, you will not get what you want.
Tame your body language
The body language provides a lot of information to your audience. You should pay attention to it to make sure it works for you and not against you.
Some of the gestures that provide more information are:
- Self-blocking by crossing your arms: Indicates lack of receptivity
- Touching many things: Indicates nervousness and lack of confidence
- Not using your hands to accompany what you say: Indicates rigidity and limits credibility
There you have some techniques anchored in psychology for you to become a master of public speaking. Don’t forget all you can do with this skill! It can do wonders for your financial health.
