He had originally been chosen by the Mavericks with the fifth pick of the first round.
Young was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 19th of 1998 to his parents Candice and Rayford Young.
His father was known in the United States for his time at Texas Tech, but he is known internationally for playing professional basketball in France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
From an early age, Trae Young was trained by his father and quickly came into his own fame.
While attending Norman North High School, Young earned McDonald’s All-American honors in his senior year.
He was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma City in both 2016 and 2017.
Young competed in the Jordan Brand Classic during his senior year and won the McDonald’s All-American Three-Point Contest.
Following his senior year, Trae Young played a single season with the University of Oklahoma before moving on to the National Basketball Association.
In this single season, Young became the first player in Division I history to lead the nation in scoring and assists.
Young also had four games during his freshman season in which he scored 40 or more points, and his scoring average became the highest in Big-12 history.
With all these accomplishments under his belt, Trae Young was ready to enter the National Basketball Association draft as an early-entry candidate.
Since joining the Atlanta Hawks, Young has continued to set and break records within Hawks and league-wide history.

During his rookie year with the Hawks, Young scored the first triple-double ever recorded by an Atlanta Hawks rookie.
Motivated by his massive aspirations, Trae Young is ushering in a new era for the Atlanta Hawks.
Does Trae Young Have A Son?
Yes, Trae Young has a son named Tydus Reign Young who was born on June 2nd of 2022.
Tydus Young’s mother is Young’s fianceé, Shelby Miller, who was on the University of Oklahoma’s cheerleading squad and three years ahead of Young.
Miller began attending the Big-12 university because her mother had worked for the school for years.
Aside from Young’s multimillion career, the pair live like any other 20-year-olds in Atlanta, Georgia.
According to Young, he was incredibly nervous to propose to his then-girlfriend and was still in the middle of the season when he popped the question in December of 2021.
The basketball star was certain that she would agree to marry him, but the time leading up to the magical moment was still incredibly stressful for Young.
The couple is planning on getting married by the summer of 2023, with Miller taking on the majority of the wedding planning since Young has been busy with the Atlanta Hawks.
Although Young may be focusing on his basketball career for the moment, his soon-to-be wife still tries her best to get his opinion on the details surrounding their weddings.
The only request that Young has made for his wedding is that it will be filled with good music and “slow jams.”
When the 2022 season ends, Young is excited to see his family.
Family has always been a major part of Trae Young’s life, even before he started a family of his own.
Whenever he’s in town, Young always tries to take his younger brother to school or get lunch with him.
When Young isn’t spending private time with his family, they all work together through the Trae Young Family Foundation.
This foundation focuses on improving people’s mental health by instilling them with the proper confidence to deal with the doubters and struggles in their lives.
Why Does Trae Young Compare Himself To Steph Curry?
Trae Young began comparing himself to Steph Curry following some supportive words from National Basketball Association legend, Shaquille O’Neal.
Young believes that he will be the one to break Steph Curry’s league-wide records thanks to the success that he has found early in his career and his dedication to self-improvement.
O’Neal has always been known for being critical of both fellow players from when he was still playing in the National Basketball Association and the many players who have come after his time.
Despite his typically critical nature, O’Neal was quick to praise Young and said that the young basketball star was his second favorite player because “I like that he lives for these moments.”
The type of moment that the retired basketball legend was talking about was Young’s back-to-back wins against the Charlotte Hornets and the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2022.
By the end of the season, Young had averaged more than 28 points and 9 assists per game.
Fans of Young feel that the Atlanta Hawks could have done better if the entire team could have reached the same level at which he has been playing.
Part of what has made Young able to play at such a high level is his hope of beating the records that Steph Curry achieved throughout the entire National Basketball Association.
Although Young originally said that he would beat Curry’s records within a year in 2020, the young star was pulled back from 22 different games due to minor injuries.
Despite how boastful these claims sounded, Trae Young has assured the public that he had nothing but respect for Curry and his contributions to professional basketball.
Young believes that he would not be the basketball player he is today if it weren’t for his being inspired by Curry and continually motivated by the great basketball legend.
Is Trae Young Going To Be Playing For Team USA At The World Cup?
Yes, Trae Young will likely join Team USA at the World Cup thanks to his connection to the new managing director of the national team, Grant Hill.
Young began forming a relationship with Hill when he joined the Atlanta Hawks since Hill is a co-owner and executive for the professional team.
Representing his country at the World Cup has been a dream of Young’s since he was in high school.
After attempting to make the cut for Team USA multiple times since high school, a couple of those attempts nearly led him to achieve his long-time goal.
When Team USA was struggling to fill their roster in the 2019 World Cup in China, Young had just finished his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks and was even given the opportunity to practice with the USA Select Team.
This is the team that scrimmages against Team USA in preparation for the World Cup.
At the time, Gregg Popovich couldn’t get any of the typical All-Stars to agree to join the team, so he began looking outside of the typical choices and began to consider Trae Young who had just won Rookie of the Year.
This opportunity was cut short when Young got a serious ear infection and could not play.
Young would lose another opportunity to play for Popovich’s national team when Keldon Johnson from the San Antonio Spurs was chosen instead.
With Grant Hill becoming the new managing director of the national team, Young was able to discuss his dream with Hill and is feeling confident about his dream coming true following their discussions.
Hill will be joined by Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who is also serving his first year with Team USA.
Even the International Basketball Federation is excited about Trae Young’s arrival.
Why Do Dejounte Murray And Trae Young Play So Well Together?
Dejounte Murray and Trae Young are able to play so well together thanks to their strengths being different yet compatible with each other.
While Trae Young serves a fierce offensive playing style, Murray is an All-Star combo guard who can light just as much of a fire from the back of the court.
Young and Murray are the third pair from the Atlanta Hawks to each earn at least 20 points and 10 assists per game.
Although there is no denying the sheer amount of talent these players bring to the court, they have no intention of making the team all about them.
Instead, the pair hopes to inspire the rest of their team towards improvement and plan on restoring the spirit of the Atlanta Hawks.
According to Dejounte Murray, “As far as me and Trae, it’s about the Atlanta Hawks—not me and Trae.
But we’re going to set the tone and go from there.”
There are too many professional basketball players who are only looking to do well enough to get into the league, make their money, and then leave with their fame and fortune.
Young and Murray are looking to motivate their teammates to break the mold and shoot for the records that former players have left behind.
This pair is more than just score leaders.
They’re hoping to be leaders who bring up players who can play just as well as them or even better.
Their goal isn’t their wealth or fame, but rather restoring the glory that the Atlanta Hawks once had.
