Stephen Silas’ adventure with the Rockets is over. As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPNthe Texas organization has decided not to execute the option for the fourth year of the coach’s contract, so he will not continue and they will sign a new coach for the 2023-24 season.
Regarding the moment in which such determination will be made official, the aforementioned journalist comments that the only thing left is for Houston’s general manager, Rafael Stone, to meet with Silas to formalize the separation.
Following the final regular-season game against Washington, Silas confirmed that he would meet with management almost immediately, but did not comment on his ending as Rockets coach.
“I feel proud. I have always wanted to be head coach. He wanted to be like my dad. I’m proud of these guys, their hard work, their growth and maturity as they went through the season,” he says.
Silas has completed a three-year spell with the Rockets to sign a global balance of 59-117. They have not been easy years. In addition to dealing with a deep rebuild, in this last campaign he was affected by the death of his father, Paul Silas.
“It is definitely a difficult year. Death is hard when it comes through the person closest to you, the person who teaches you everything you do every day. You lose it and it becomes difficult. What made it more bearable was the group of guys in this locker room. They never gave up, they pushed themselves and wanted to do the right things. In addition, the staff that has accompanied me has helped me; I have shared quiet moments or leaned on them », she explains.
