The drama is over, at least for one superstar free agent. After much speculation about joining Aaron Rodgers in New York, Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Despite no current resolution with Lamar Jackson, the team’s wide receiver room just got better. Here’s everything to know about OBJ to the Ravens.
It Looks Like A Prove-It Deal
Ever since Odell tore his ACL in Super Bowl LVI, many teams were scared of signing the three-time Pro Bowler to their roster. It was for good reason. After all, his injury history of him is a bit concerning since he hasn’t been fully healthy since 2019.
However, his recent workout video indicates he’s 100% healthy and ready to contribute. Baltimore was intrigued, and it led to an agreement between both sides. Jets fans, my apologies for your loss (Note: Aaron Rodgers’ “wish list” included Beckham).
The one-year deal for Beckham is worth up to $18 million. This is $3 million more than what the wideout was seeking in free agency. It’s a win-win for both sides. Beckham gets his money from him, and the team can move on quickly if things don’t work out.
Is This Enough To Intrigue Lamar Jackson?
In my opinion, yes. The Ravens haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since Marquise Brown in 2021. With Jackson consistently relying on tight end Mark Andrews, it was easy for defenses to gameplan against their passing game.
This isn’t to say the wideouts on the team are terrible. But, when it consists of guys like Desean Jackson and Demarcus Robinson, it needs an upgrade.
Beckham’s presence will bring attention away from guys like Rashod Bateman, who has shown he’s reliable when healthy. The same can be said for Devin Duvernay, a speedy wideout himself.
However, this signing itself loses its glory if Lamar Jackson doesn’t re-sign with the Ravens. Negotiations have not gone well between the quarterback and the team. We know Jackson requested a trade on March 2nd, but nothing has changed since then.
But, let’s say he does stay with the Ravens long-term. He finally has a dependable WR1 who is capable of making big plays. Andrews is still a top-five tight end despite a down year last season. JK Dobbins is a solid running back, and Gus Edwards is still there too. Combine that all together, and the offense looks pretty solid to contend in the AFC.
Regardless, Odell Beckham Jr. is finally on an NFL team again. The question is: will he be there for the long run and not just a season?
