The Chicago Cubs had a mediocre season in 2022.
They weren’t expected to compete, but a 74-88 record is still disappointing after spending lots of dollars on several offseason additions.
Nevertheless, they are reportedly eager to try again in 2023: they do have some interesting players, some prospects near the majors, and money to spend.
One of their many openings is at first base, a position in which they didn’t get consistent production in 2022.
A Cubs insider acknowledges that it should be upgraded, but warns that a specific player wouldn’t be a fit.

Bell would surely be an upgrade over what the Cubs had this past season, but the price tag will surely be too big for them to seriously consider an offer having so many needs.
The Cubs Shouldn’t Give A Long-Term Deal To Bell
The last thing the Cubs need is tying themselves to a corner infielder well into his thirties.
Bell is no slouch with the bat, though.
In 2022, he hit .266/.362/.422 with 17 home runs between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres.
The OBP was really nice, but the lack of power could be concerning down the road and his defense at first base is well-below average.
Bell is 30 years old and can certainly get on base, but he will likely look for a large contract in money and years, and the Cubs are in no position to do that.
With free agency not rich in (quality) options to play first base, the Cubs will have to get creative within the organization or by swinging a trade.
