On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals and their fans received bad news when it was announced that veteran right-hander and two-time World Series champion Adam Wainwright would be opening the 2023 season on the injured list.

The 41-year-old is dealing with a strained groin.

Wainwright finished the 2022 season on a down note, as a hitch in his delivery caused his velocity to drop drastically, which caused an uncharacteristically bad month that kept him out of the rotation for the postseason.

On Twitter, Cardinals writer John Denton provided an update on Wainwright’s situation and what caused the issue, revealing that the right-hander strained his groin in the weight room on Tuesday before the championship game of the World Baseball Classic.

According to manager Oli Marmol, the veteran right-hander is to be shut down for several weeks.

The Cardinals do have two solid options on their roster who could fill the void until Wainwright returns.

Andre Pallante and Jake Woodford are two in-house options who could fill his spot in the rotation.

This will ultimately take the three-time All-Star out of the running for the start on Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays, making Miles Mikolas the likely candidate to draw the start.

But it appears as if Wainwright will be on the injured list for a good chunk of time, which ultimately opens up a familiar wound for Cardinals fans, who believed that the team could have signed a starter in free agency in order to combat this issue.

Left-hander Andrew Suarez was added on a minor league deal and could potentially be a candidate to start.
