At the onset of the offseason, there was no concept of the St. Louis Cardinals needing a new play-by-play TV announcer.

However, that changed when longtime broadcaster Dan McLaughlin was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and later charged with a felony following his third DWI offense.

McLaughlin and Bally Sports Midwest mutually agreed to part ways.

But on Monday, the Cardinals found themselves a new play-by-play announcer to join the Bally Sports Midwest team, and it’s a familiar face.

Chip Caray, who had been the announcer for the Atlanta Braves for the past 18 seasons, has taken the job and will replace McLaughlin.

Caray, 57, is hardly a new face.

He is a native of St. Louis and is the grandson of legendary Cardinals broadcaster Harry Caray.

So naturally, he understands the history of the Cardinals and those who came before him.

McLaughlin served as the play-by-play voice of the team for 24 years.

Geez will join color analysts and former Cardinals Brad Thompson and Jim Edmonds, the latter of whom is a Cardinals Hall of Famer.

The 57-year-old got his start with the NBA’s Orlando Magic before joining the Braves broadcast team.

After leaving the Braves broadcast team for the first time, he called games for the Seattle Mariners and worked national MLB studio shows and broadcasts for FOX Sports.

He later joined the Chicago Cubs broadcast team before returning to the Braves, while also taking on a role with TBS.

Now, he’ll begin the next chapter of his storied career in St. Louis.
